Many of my patients travel to Madrid for surgery with me, from other parts of Spain and from abroad. If you live outside Madrid, the first step is a video consultation, and my international patient coordinator supports you from first contact through to your post-operative care.
I trained and have practised in university hospitals in Italy, the United Kingdom and Spain, and I am certified to practise the specialty in Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates.
| First step | Video consultation, €90. |
|---|---|
| Consultation | Calle Conde de Aranda 15, Madrid. |
| Surgery | In hospital, at HLA Universitario Moncloa or Vithas Madrid Aravaca. |
| Languages | Spanish, English and Italian, and also Portuguese. |
How do I start if I live abroad or outside Madrid?
With a video consultation. It lets us get to know each other, answer your questions and guide you before you book any travel. It costs €90, the same as an in-person consultation, and that amount is deducted from the price of your surgery if you have it with me.
The examination and the final decision always take place in person, at my consulting rooms in Madrid. What that appointment is like is explained in The First Consultation.
To book the video consultation, send a WhatsApp message to +34 722 77 10 78 or email consultacirugia@drmarcoromeo.com.
How many trips will I make and how many days do I stay in Madrid?
Usually just one trip: the in-person consultation and the pre-operative assessment take place in Madrid in the days before surgery. For certain operations (rhinoplasty, for example) you can go home and come back to my clinic for the first check-up. We decide this before you go into the operating theatre.
After your operation you stay in Madrid until the first check-up. As a guide:
| Rhinoplasty | 8 days |
|---|---|
| Facelift | 12-15 days |
| Blepharoplasty | 7 days |
| Breast surgery | 7-12 days |
| Body surgery | 15 days |
I give you the dates for your case in the video consultation, so you can plan your trip with time to spare.
Where will I have surgery?
In hospital, never in a clinic: at Hospital HLA Universitario Moncloa or Hospital Universitario Vithas Madrid Aravaca, both in Madrid. HLA Moncloa is the only hospital in Madrid certified for health tourism. Depending on the procedure, you go home the same day or stay one night. I explain it in Where I Operate.
What is follow-up like once I am back home?
The first check-ups are in person, at my consulting rooms in Madrid, before you go home. After that, some of the long-term appointments can be done by video consultation. Between appointments you are not on your own: my team and I are available at any time, by phone or WhatsApp, and a photo helps a great deal in assessing a wound or swelling from a distance.
All follow-up appointments are included in the price of your surgery, and I carry them out myself. What each stage is like is explained in Recovery and Post-Operative Follow-Up.
What language will I be seen in?
I see patients in Spanish, English, Italian and Portuguese. If you speak another language, my team will arrange an interpreter. We have interpreters for Russian, Arabic and Danish, among others.
Do you help with travel and accommodation?
Yes. My international patient coordinator supports you from first contact through to your post-operative care: she helps you arrange your travel, a hotel in central Madrid and an interpreter if you need one.
She can also arrange your airport transfer and, if you wish, a car with driver or a personal shopper.
Your whole process is confidential from start to finish.
Will I know the price before I travel? How do I pay?
After the video consultation I give you an exact quote, so you can decide before booking your trip.
The fixed quote is given in writing, as it is for every patient. Financing is only available to residents in Spain. What the quote includes and how payment works is explained in Financing and Your Quote.
Other questions from patients who travel
Does the video consultation replace the in-person consultation?
No. It is there to guide you before you travel. The examination and the final decision always take place in person.
Do you also see patients from other cities in Spain?
Yes. The process is the same: video consultation, in-person consultation and surgery in Madrid.
When can I fly after surgery?
It depends on the operation; the usual approach is to wait until the first check-up.
What if I have a question or a problem once I am back home?
Call or send a WhatsApp message to +34 722 77 10 78: my team and I are available. Out of hours, you have the emergency number we give you at your pre-operative assessment.
What guarantees do I have if I have surgery in Spain?
You are operated on by a specialist in Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery, and in a hospital. I explain what Spanish law requires of anyone who performs cosmetic surgery in my article on the new Spanish “Ley Sara”.
